About this listen
When a worker goes missing from a North Sea gas platform, there seem to be just two possible explanations - it was a tragic accident or a suicide. It does not take Smith and his detectives long, however, to discover that James Bell led a double life back onshore in Kings Lake, a life complicated enough to make him at least one dangerous enemy. Before the case can be unraveled, Smith must get a new team working together; Waters and Murray are still there, but one of Wilson's men is transferred to him, and the female detective constable from Longmarsh poses some unexpected problems for her new sergeant. Together they begin to investigate the links between the companies and the people that bring ashore the oil and gas, and they also find themselves caught up in the seamier side of life that exists beneath Lake's everyday comings and goings. Jo Evison begins to delve more deeply into the story of the Andretti murders, and Smith himself has to face the fact that he might no longer be considered fit for duty.

Thought provoking but enjoyable tome
This book really had me fascinated! I am now getting used to the narrator's lugubrious intonations - but have realised that it accurately reflects the pedantic nature of DC Smith! But I enjoy not only his focus on correctness, especially in the use of the English language, but also his occasional lapses in moral rectitude. The tongue in cheek sense of humour never fails to bring a smile.
I do enjoy this author's skills in research and writing and am only sorry that the series, like us all, is finite. Thank you Peter Grainger.

Loved the humour & character development in this.
Grainger is letting us get to know DC Smith better now & also allowing us to enjoy his interactions with his team and others. The humour was particularly good in this one & it was lovely to see Smith developing a friendship with a lady too.
I really enjoy Gildart Jackson's narration; his timing is great & his tone of voice well matched to the characters.
I'll be back for more DC Smith stories!

Once again an Intriguing listen
Well narrated , with that subtle touch of difference to be able to tell the characters apart,
Stories are well crafted with a human touch, The crimes are not perpetrated by the usual habitually violent criminal types, With those left in a past life and hinted on by a reference now and again, with a particular one that still haunts D C Smith, even though finalised.
I get moments of a Frost type main character along with his contempt of the top brass.
Looking forward t9 the next book, which may or may not tie up a loose end.

Every book just gets better
A considered, clever and very human Detective. ‘DC’ and his team are wonderful characters and each book in the series builds on their own individual stories without losing the thread of the crime to mellow drama or soap opera. Love the narration. Can’t wait to read more!
