About this listen

As a private banker working for the largest bank in the world, UBS, Bradley Birkenfeld was an expert in Switzerland's shell-game of offshore companies and secret numbered accounts. He wined and dined ultrawealthy clients whose millions of dollars were hidden away from business partners, spouses, and tax authorities. As his client list grew, Birkenfeld lived a life of money, fast cars, and beautiful women, but when he discovered that UBS was planning to betray him, he blew the whistle to the US government.

The Department of Justice scorned Birkenfeld's unprecedented whistle-blowing and attempted to silence him with a conspiracy charge. Yet Birkenfeld would not be intimidated. He took his secrets to the US Senate, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Internal Revenue Service, where he prevailed. His bombshell revelations helped the US Treasury recover over $15 billion (and counting) in back taxes, fines, and penalties from American tax cheats. But Birkenfeld was shocked to discover that at the same time he was cooperating with the US government, the Department of Justice was still doggedly pursuing him. He was arrested and served 30 months in federal prison. When he emerged, the Internal Revenue Service gave him a whistle-blower award for $104 million, the largest such reward in history.

cool story but author sounds like a douche

I found the facts of the story interesting, but couldn't get over what an egotistical a-hole the author seems.

Good story, main character hard to like at times

The story is good, but there were moments I found Bradley challenging to 'get behind'. Overall a good read, worth getting, just don't expect to fall in love with the guy throughout.

The story is great, but

I think there is something seriously with with this guy. Why go on and on with the crusade after the job is done. I agree with the other reviews. He has just got a huge ego.

Honest exposé of dishonest people and practices

Bradley Birkenfeld tells a detailed and compelling inside story of financial and political duplicity. He seems to get criticism for not being likeable. I’m not sure that shooting the messenger is the correct approach. I couldn’t stop listening all the way to the end.

Bad ego

Faux tough guy, wanna-be James Bond, with an out of control ego thinks he is a hero when in fact all he did was turn on his employer before they turned on him

A fascinating read

The depths of corruption kept me in awe the entire way through this book. Brads commitment to courage and justice was very inspiring. Loved every second of it.

Unbearable

Full of cliché descriptions, a boastful tone and an author focused on constantly big noting himself made this an intolerable assault on the senses. Initially I thought it was a satire but sadly not. Discontinued it.

Worth a listen but be warned...

An amazing story in amongst this egomaniacs self flagellation. It's a struggle to get through but the story in the background is worth it. Mostly lol

Ego trip

I was really looking forward to this book but unfortunately it failed.

Now reading the other reviews I can see I wasn’t the only only one.

Full of self satisfaction. Started off good until he decided to fess up but then it was downhill from there and a real struggle to finish.
