About this listen
Warm-hearted, humorous and wonderfully wise, Love in the Time of Bertie offers philosophical insight as well as sartorial elegance. Catch up once again with the extended family at No 44, in the latest instalment in the Scotland Street series.
Life for Bertie seems to be moving at a pace that is rather out of his control. In Drummond Place gardens, it seems that Olive has their future together all planned out. Meanwhile, upstairs at 44 Scotland Street, Bertie’s father, Stuart, is powerless to stop over-bearing Irene and her motion for Bertie to travel to Aberdeen on a three-month secondment. And, further up in the New Town, while Bruce Anderson plots with old-school chums, love blossoms in Big Lou’s Cafe.

"A deliciously engaging Edinburgh comedy." (Financial Times)
"McCall Smith’s generous writing and dry humor, his gentleness and humanity, and his ability to evoke a place and a set of characters without caricature or condescension have endeared his books to readers." (New York Times)

The equivalent to easy-listening music, in a story
I have only read Scotland St books before. Listening to it narrated by a Scot added a wonderful new dimension. The narrator was very convincing and to do so many different dialects was impressive.
I enjoyed this more than previous books in the series also, because finally some of the annoying characters got their come-uppance. I get a bit bored by some of the philosophical explorations that go nowhere, as well as the implausible scenes between characters like between Domenica and the neighbour and how she described it to her husband. And Bob didn't seem at all interested in asking Lou about herself. Other than that, it was all very sweet, as usual.

This is a beautiful book with delightful characters through whom the whole scope of love is shared. The gentle reader is exquisite.

Brilliant as always
AMS is a national treasure- absolutely nothing that he’s written is second rate and Love in the Time of Bertie is no exception. I hope he goes on to write many more 44 Scotland Street, Detective Varys etc stories for many years to come!
Exceptional narration by Peter O’Toole- he really captures each of the characters, as well as the authors humour and intent, I believe.
