About this listen

A vow to remain unwed and a bargain designed to find her a husband. What could possibly go wrong?

Elsie and her two best friends made a childhood vow to never marry.

But when Elsie begins her first season in London, her mother presents her with an irresistible bargain: if she says yes to each and every man's invitations and still remains unattached by the end of the season, she will receive her inheritance and become a free woman.

She is thrown into the spotlight by increasing attention in the newspaper gossip articles, and keeping her end of the bargain seems impossible - especially when her best friend's tyrant of a brother, Lord Cameron, begins to make advances that Elsie literally cannot refuse.

The gossip grows increasingly malicious, leaving destroyed reputations and broken homes in its wake, and Elsie can't seem to escape its focus. But it's her own blossoming feelings for Lord Cameron that pose the greater threat. If she can't keep him out of her heart, she's sure to compromise the bargain, break her vow, and lose her one shot at freedom for good.

Original story

When you get past the narration, its a wonderful story of friendship and forgiveness and of course, love.
I tried narration sped up, but went back to original speed. I realised I couldn't multi task with this narrator, you just have to give into it with 100% focus and ignore the 'nooos' (news) American accent peeking through at times.

An interesting and great start to the series

Having already listened to (and enjoyed) book 3 (despite the narration), I plan to listen to the series in its entirety as I really enjoyed the writing and plot of book 1 also. I loved the solidarity of the 3 ladies built from a friendship since childhood. This is a clean romance with a focus on their relationship. There’s a clear purpose to each side-story and the introduction of characters whether to figure in this and/or the coming books. The narrator actually does a great job of the dialogues - both male and female, but it’s the general storytelling that suffers when she drags out sentences to a breathy whimsical full stop. To reduce this effect, I listen to her narrations at a x.1.1 speed with earbuds (so I don’t miss words). Yes, she also pronounces words strangely, I.e ‘fact’, which had me chuckling, but I’m used to it now. This story is worth listening in spite of it (as she’s certainly not the worst HR narrator I’ve heard).

average

I struggled, the narration was so extremely painful I had to increase the speed, I nearly sent this back but wanted to see what happened. The story was okay, however, I felt in the end there was so much left unfinished. I understand this is a series, however once I saw the same narrator is reading these I could not put myself through it.

good book, terrible narration

the narration sounded completely unnatural, the storyline was good. The mother of the protagonist came across to me as a heartless B$%#h!!

Unnatural narration

The narrator made what is probably a good book into an almost unbearable one. Does anyone really speak in such an affected manner?? This was so disappointing after I greatly enjoyed other Audible books by Kasey Stockton.

Disappointing

I like this author’s stories, but the narration was difficult to endure. The narrator’s accent was unusual, and her intonation is bizarre. I couldn’t get past the first chapter, so I can’t comment on the book itself.
