About this listen

Twenty-eight-year-old Oryn Patterson isn't like other people. Being an extremely shy social introvert is only part of the problem. Oryn has dissociative identity disorder. He may look like a normal man on the outside, but spend five minutes with him, and his daily struggles begin to show.

Oryn shares his life and headspace with five distinctively different alters. Reed, a protective, very straight jock. Cohen, a flamboyantly gay 19-year-old who is a social butterfly. Cove, a self-destructive terror, whose past haunts him. Theo, an asexual man of little emotion, whose focus is on maintaining order. And Rain, a five-year-old child whose only concern is Batman.

Vaughn Sinclair is stuck in a rut. When his job doesn't offer the same thrill it once did, he decides it's time to mix-up his stagnant, boring routine. Little does he know, the man he meets during an impromptu decision to return to college is anything but ordinary.

Vaughn's heart defies logic, and he finds himself falling in love with this strange new man. But how can you love someone who isn't always themself? It may not be easy, but Vaughn is determined to try.

Brilliant and enthralling

This was an amazingly beautiful read. Loved every moment and had me crying with them. Laughing and getting frustrated. Thank you for a beautifully written romance and the Narration was fantastic as well.

Absolutely brilliant

This is my first Ashley James book and it won’t be my last. The research, time and care that went into crafting this piece of work was fantastic. Adam Gold’s narration was also excellent and he used different voices for each of Oryn’s alters.

Vaughn and Oryn meet when they both take some university level night classes and partner up for a group project. Oryn immediately discloses his struggles living with dissociative identity disorder but Vaughn is still very drawn to him and they very slowly become friends… and then more. The story focuses on the development of Vaughn and Oryn’s relationship, specifically the dynamics Vaughn learns to navigate with Oryn’s 5 alternate personalities and their random switching.

TW: there is mention that Oryn has suffered long-term abuse as a child but no discussion of details on-page, as he has no memory of what occurred. There is some self harm by one of his alters.

This will be a re-read for sure.

It's so much more than a romance book.

This book is... perfection.

Nicky James did something outstanding portraying these characters. Yes, it is a romance book but it is so much more than that. This is a story about trauma, acceptance, recovery and moving on with the help of unconditional love from someone. It really could have been a disaster but I appreciate the author didn't romanticize or fetishise Oryn's mental disorder and wrote it beautifully. I also have to mention Adam Gold did a great job narrating this story. This is going to be one of my favourite books of all time.

this book made me feel so much. just a devastingly perfectly imperfect world that I felt the whole time was just a privilege to be able to be a fly on the wall for.
