About this listen

Thursday Next, literary detective and newlywed, is back to embark on an adventure that begins, quite literally on her own doorstep. It seems that Landen, her husband of four weeks, actually drowned in an accident when he was two years old. Someone, somewhere, sometime, is responsible. The sinister Goliath Corporation wants its operative Jack Schitt out of the poem in which Thursday trapped him, and it will do almost anything to achieve this - but bribing the ChronoGuard? Is that possible?

Having barely caught her breath after The Eyre Affair, Thursday must battle corrupt politicians, try to save the world from extinction, and help the Neanderthals to species self-determination. Mastadon migrations, journeys into Just William, a chance meeting with the Flopsy Bunnies, and violent life-and-death struggles in the summer sales are all part of a greater plan.

But whose? and why?

Please note: Chapter 13 has been intentionally omitted from this title.

jolly good fun

more whimsical plot developments and stranger flights of fancy. Sweet and entertaining. If only book jumping were real!

Lovely

The first book in the series was fun. This one takes it all a step further. Getting lost in Jasper Fforde's imagination is delightful. It had me laughing out loud frequently. A lovely book for literary nerds with a taste for the fantastic.

The narrator ruins it

I love these books. It’s so disappointing that they are narrated badly. It would be fantastic if they were re-recorded.

Misophoniac warning

I absolutely loved this sequel - possibly more than the first book. Fforde manages to create interesting, funny characters who approach dramatic situations with realistic approaches rather than only finding drama by idiocy.

The twists and turns are wonderful to read and I felt like I was going down a particularly delicious slip and slide as I listened.

I listened to the audiobook but have also read the hard copy. You did miss a few small but clever things from the written text which don’t translate well to audio so if you enjoy the audio DEFINITELY read the hard copy too.

In terms of the audio book review: It was great because the performance was wonderful, the narrator reads the different parts exceptionally well, and I got to listen to the book while travelling when I wouldn’t have time to read! Unfortunately, I had issues with this narrator and the first book triggering my misophonia around mouth sounds (it felt like there might have been an editing issue or something – the mic was picking up things it wasn’t meant to or were meant to be cut out). I was excited with book 2 to find that had been fixed (another reason I feel like it might be tech issue) but fair warning to fellow misophoniacs that at chapter 19 for some reason the audio quality changes quite a bit and the mouth sounds return along with just a slightly worse mic sound.

I managed to cope with it because I was listening in my car and had the background noise of the road but if I had my headphones in I think I would have struggled.

The book itself is exceptional. I’m just waiting to see if I want to test the waters with the third audiobook or wait until I can snatch a few minutes here and there to read the hard copy.

Fforde creates such a fun, alternative world which, even if you haven’t read the literature mentioned throughout, is complicated while being followable (though I did struggle a little in the first book getting my head around it) and rich with characters and places you’d wish you got to meet!

5 stars for Jasper Fforde

Really enjoyed the plot however something happened half way through the audiobook (changed microphones?) and the quality dropped off terribly. Just not clear as I expected audible books to be.
Top book though. I love Jane Eyre, but enjoyed the plot of this much more than The Eyre Affair.

Great story, narrator. Audio quality bad 2nd half

At the start of chapter 19, the audio quality plummets. Not sure what happened there. I would refund this, except for the redeeming story (enthralling and witty, as usual) and the excellent narration. Character voices are unique, flamboyant and discernable from one another. Tone and pacing on point.

If it wasn't part of a series, and crucial to re-listens, I would probably refund or look elsewhere for a better quality recording
