About this listen

Vanessa Rooney is a thirty-something dental hygienist who finds herself a single mum with a hole in her heart where her husband had been. Somehow, she finds the courage to fulfil her dream of writing a romance novel but soon discovers that it has been plagiarised by celebrity author Charlotte Lancaster.

Vanessa sues Charlotte with the help of solicitor Dave Rendall, who's nursing some unfulfilled dreams of his own. When gun QC Marcus Stafford joins their legal team, Vanessa feels like her perfect man has stepped into her life.

As all hell breaks loose publicly and privately, Vanessa confronts a painful past and realises that she's an intelligent, funny, amazing woman and Marcus Stafford is, well, a tosspot. Vanessa finally understands that what she wanted wasn't what she needed, but has this realisation come too late?

Delightful read!

Warm, funny and full of heart Losing the Plot is the first novel of accomplished television writer, Elizabeth Coleman. This charming story of dumped mum Vanessa Rooney’s fight to reclaim the rights to her first romantic novel balances wit and warmth beautifully. And narrator Caroline Lee captures the tone and the mood of the novel perfectly. Put your feet up, grab a coffee and listen!

So so dull

I was bored in the first chapter . Kept going hoping it would develop . What could have been a fun story was average at best .

Some humour but overall can’t recommend

I wanted to like this book more than I did. There were some funny parts and the characters were generally likeable. The main character was portrayed however as ditzy and juvenile even though she is a woman in her 30s with two children. Her character was narrated in a high pitched, squealing and childish voice. The final chapter was pathetic and reminiscent of terrible rom com movies where there’s an over the top public declaration of love.

Re the narration I usually love Caroline Lee’s narrations and have listened to many of her books. This was such a miss for me, especially how the main character was narrated. I also don’t think it’s necessary to act out the narration, eg if someone is sneezing I don’t need to hear an imitation of sneezing “a Choo, a Choo, a Choo”.

I forgot it was a book split into two parts and was happily coming to the end of the first part thinking it was going to wrap up soon. I then realised it had another 6 hours to go. I persevered to the end but in hindsight I shouldn’t have.

I also think the Publisher’s Summary for this book gives too much of the story away. That combined with it being a predictable storyline leaves not much to explore/discover.
