A Hopeless Recording

I've been using Audible to revisit books I have enjoyed in the past. I'm not so interested in getting on with the story, which I usually remember pretty well in outline. What I enjoy is the chance to hear again the detail without the pressure to know what happened next.

This was impossible with this appalling reading of Lorna Doone. I could barely understand one word in ten. It was fair enough for the author to choose to read in mild Devon accent but his enunciation was not very clear and his voice tended to die away with each sentence. I stuck it out for a few chapters but as time went on I could follow less and less.

If I had bought a book where the printed text was as indecipherable as this reading was I would have returned it. Is this possible with audiobooks? I don't complain when I realize I've made a bad choice and stop listening in the middle. I'm prepared to pay for my mistakes. It's another matter when I don't get a chance to decide whether I will enjoy the book or not.
