About this listen

A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Lonesome Dove, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America.

Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

This remastered audio edition is expertly read by actor Lee Horsley, best known for his starring role in the television series Matt Houston.

A Western Classic

The character development is exquisite, the story is well paced and the narrator does an excellent job. One of the best stories I’ve ever heard and it’s from a genre that I don’t typically gravitate to.

Fantastic

Great epic arc of a tale with characters and action aplenty. Seemed like quite a big ask at more than 30 hours listening but now I’ll miss the darn thing!

What a story!

Absolutely loved the novel it is easily in my top 3 perhaps even number 1 of all time, such rich characters I didn’t wanna leave the ‘hat creek cattle company’ boys. I feel emotional almost finishing this book which is peculiar as for such a simple story I'd have never imagined that to be so yet the relationships of all the characters within the novel really stuck with me even after finishing.

this work of art is hilarious, colourful and memorable and undoubtably will leave a mark on you, definitely would recommend this story to anyone.

Head ‘‘em up…roll ‘‘em out .

It’s the greatest western story of all time. The mini-series was epic and listening to this story…I can’t imagine anyone else other than Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones and all the other characters moving overland across the plains . Timeless .
