About this listen

Penny Dreadfuls - known as "Penny Bloods" in their day - were a regular part of life in the 1800s. Here, we recreate the Victorian volumes of Lloyd's Weekly Penny Miscellany - one of the best known, longest running Penny Bloods of the mid-1800s.

In each edition, you can expect to discover a mixture of standalone short stories, ongoing serialized stories, jokes, and other snippets of entertainment. While the subjects covered by these wonderful period stories can run from rural love to 'orrible murder, they all share one thing - they are an authentic window into the everyday lives of the people who experienced these stories, and the times in which they lived.

This first edition begins the serialized stories Ada, the Betrayed; or The Murder at the Old Smithy, and Jane Brightwell; or The Farmer's Daughter - and contains the standalone stories "The Peasant Bride"; "The Robbery"; "The Elopement"; "The Disinherited"; and "The Murderer's End", along with "Quips and Cracks", jokes and sketches.

At the end, you'll find a short annotation of how these modern editions came to be.

If you want to experience a little bit of life exactly as the audience of Lloyd's Penny Weekly Miscellany did in 1843, then pull up a chair, settle down, and start your authentic Victorian listening journey....
