About this listen
The Sunday Times best seller
A new fully updated narrative edition of David Attenborough’s seminal biography of our world, Living Planet.
Nowhere on our planet is devoid of life. Plants and animals thrive or survive within every extreme of climate and habitat that it offers. Single species, and often whole communities, adapt to make the most of ice cap and tundra, forest and plain, desert, ocean and volcano. These adaptations can be truly extraordinary: fish that walk or lay eggs on leaves in mid-air, snakes that fly, flightless birds that graze like deer and bears that grow hair on the soles of their feet.
In Living Planet, David Attenborough’s searching eye, unfailing curiosity and infectious enthusiasm explain and illuminate the intricate lives of the these colonies, from the lonely heights of the Himalayas to the wild creatures that have established themselves in the most recent of environments, the city. By the end of this book, it is difficult to say which is the more astonishing - the ingenuity with which individual species contrive a living, or the complexity of their interdependence on each other and on the habitations provided by our planet.
In this new edition, the author, with the help of zoologist Matthew Cobb, has added all the most up-to-date discoveries of ecology and biology. He also addresses the urgent issues facing our living planet: climate change, pollution and mass extinction of species.

plight of the planet
David weaves his narrative smoothly and succinctly, bringing together the animals. plants and ecosystems into the flowing and interdependent fabric of nature. There is a greater highlight to the damage humanity is responsible for and all I can think is that he must be disappointed at the downward spiral the natural world has undergone despite his best efforts to engage us and teach us the value of our beautiful planet. As always David Attenborough is brilliant.

Good, but not Attenboroughs best.
Having read most of Attenborough's books, this isn't his best. The performance as always is top quality but the story sort of meanders back and forth and doesn't cover any new ground.
Still an excellent read and anyone unfamiliar with his other work will get much out of it.

Fantastic audiobook
It was so easy to follow the book even if it jumped from one creature or country to another. I didn’t think I would like this book because there are no visual images to go with but I was surprisingly wrong. I listened to it in two days. Wonderful.

So entertaining, so educational
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Sir David Attenborough .. he held my attention, he told me things that amused me, dismayed me, puzzled me. I intend listening again, and again, to Google things I am unsure of, to Google things simply to understand better .. it’s a must listen to book, it’s a must listen to tale of human greed, human stupidity, human ignorance. Luvit!

Stunning!
Incredible body of work, the density of information made me stop frequently just to consider, absorb and think about the most recent chapter. What an incredible talent Sir David has for communication. I intend to have this read to me again in a few months time. Absolutely not to be missed!

Brilliant as always
David Attenborough has attained over his many years, such a well recognised voice across the world and narrates with a perfect mix of passion and objectivity on the topic that affects every human and every other living and non living thing as well. He is a pleasure to listen to. The information is essential knowledge for everyone, even if you’re only curious to hear about fascinating and unusual things.

Our planet is precious to more than just humankind
Living Planet: The Web of Life
David Attenborough is an excellent communicator. This updated 2021 publication cleverly follows the interconnected and intricate ecosystems of volcanic plate boundaries, polar regions, evergreen forests, jungles, grasslands, deserts, atmosphere, water, islands, ocean depths, and urban sprawls. Every living creature is absolutely fascinating to hear about.
The last chapter is particularly sobering given that we have no time to lose to save our planet from human induced climate calamity. To follow on this theme, I highly recommend the you follow this book up with his ‘A Life on the Planet: Witness Statement & a vision for the future,’ published in 2020.
