Dimitrij Rostovskij proslavilsja kak plodotvornyj cerkovnyj avtor - sostavitel' sbornikov zhitij svjatyh (naibolee izvestnyj, v chetyreh knigah - "Chet'i-Minei"). Rabota nad zhitijami svjatyh byla nachata 6 maja 1684 goda i prodolzhalas' v techenie 20 let. Strasti Hristovy - soglasno Evangelijam, sovokupnost' sobytij, prinjosshih Iisusu Hristu fizicheskie i duhovnye stradanija v poslednie dni i chasy ego zemnoj zhizni. Cerkov' vspominaet ih v poslednie dni pered Pashoj, v Strastnuju sedmicu, v techenie kotoroj verujushhie postepenno gotovjatsja k prazdniku. Osoboe mesto sredi Strastej Hristovyh zanimajut sobytija, proizoshedshie posle Tajnoj vecheri: arest, sud, bichevanie i kazn'.
