About this listen

#BookTok phenomenon and award-winning author Alex Aster delivers listeners a masterfully written, utterly gripping YA fantasy novel

Welcome to the Centennial.

Every 100 years, the island of Lightlark appears to host the Centennial, a deadly game that only the rulers of six realms are invited to play. The invitation is a summons—a call to embrace victory and ruin, baubles and blood. The Centennial offers the six rulers one final chance to break the curses that have plagued their realms for centuries. Each ruler has something to hide. Each realm's curse is uniquely wicked. To destroy the curses, one ruler must die.

Isla Crown is the young ruler of Wildling—a realm of temptresses cursed to kill anyone they fall in love with. They are feared and despised, and are counting on Isla to end their suffering by succeeding at the Centennial.

To survive, Isla must lie, cheat, and betray…even as love complicates everything.

Filled with secrets, deception, romance, and twists worthy of the darkest thrillers, Lightlark is a must-listen for fans of legendary fantasy writers Marie Lu, Marissa Meyer, and Leigh Bardugo.

Good story

I couldn’t get over how the voice actor couldn’t articulate certain words. Couldn’t, sentence, wouldn’t, for example were consistently pronounced as ‘coutint’, ‘setence’, ‘woutint’.
Strange because similar words or other words some usually struggle to announce correctly were perfect. I’m sorry but it was really frustrating 😂
I doubt it was an accent thing.
Otherwise her voice was pleasant and expressive, she did each character justice.

The story itself was fun, whimsical & unique.

Twists, lies and betrayals

I really liked the ideas used within this story, the world, powers and people/creatures within this book felt refreshing. I loved the story, the way I was constantly wondering who I could trust and what to believe. I feel like the concept of this story was well thought out but I do agree with others that the execution of the book was lacking and at times difficult to read, editing would have helped. However I was still able to get through the story and when I got to the end and onto book two I was well and truly hooked. If you can get through the few grammar mistake or lack of creativity in the writing style to book two you will be surprised at how much the author has grown in the second book. I am now a true lover of this series and have pre-ordered her third book.

Good narration

Really easy to listen to and differentiate between characters. However there were inconsistencies in the story line

Some twists and turns. Enjoyable

Needed a good prune! Complex world building that felt overly so. Some loose logic threads. Moderately engaging characters but I didn’t care enough about them to read further.

A Hint of Romance and Intrigue

Lightlark is an exciting and captivating beginning to a new fantasy series. Though it shares some familiar tropes with other YA fantasies, it distinguishes itself with its intricate world-building, high-stakes competition, and a determined, compelling protagonist. Alex Aster has crafted a story that's both exhilarating and thought-provoking, making it a great choice for readers who enjoy dark fantasy with a hint of romance and intrigue.

Worth a listen

Enjoyable, some of the characters are lost and storyline predictable. But was an easy listen
