About this listen

It is 1929. The world is about to change.

Finn Evans is a successful Boston banker harboring a secret that threatens to unravel his carefully constructed idyllic life. Isabelle Lazar, a young Ukrainian farm woman, endures unspeakable hardships in her homeland as she fights to save her family from the Soviet Union's iron grip. Barely escaping the Terror-Famine, she washes up alone on America's distant shores.

Fate throws Finn and Isabelle together just as the stock market crash causes a devastating collapse of his world. Amid the Great Depression and the trials of their new lives, an undeniable connection grows between them that they both must hide.

As their intertwined destinies hang in the balance, they discover that even those who have lost everything still have something left to lose.

Wonderful story…

…yet tragic. Very pertinent considering the war and ‘creeping communism’ still affecting a Ukrainian population that just want to be left alone. A beautifully crafted story with so much sadness but pockets of happiness.
Each character is so well written I found myself frustrated at times and really disliking one (no spoilers) in particular, to the point where I eagerly awaited their demise!
Much recommended.

An instant Paullina Simons classic.

Up there with Bronze Horseman. This book does not disappoint from the first minute. The narrator is so good, and clever how she uses accents for people when they are in another country, but without an accent when in their own country. It is a small thing but adds depth to characters. You are effortlessly pulled into the story and into another time and place, a story that could so easily be now in so many heartbreaking and heartwarming ways.
a Paullina Simons classic for sure. I will listen to this again and again.

Paullina Simons never disappoints

Paullina Simons knows how to bring a story to life. The emotional lives of the characters are so raw and relatable that it’s impossible to read without understanding who these fictitious people are at their core. If she writes a book I will faithfully read it because she always takes me on a journey that is worth taking.

Classic Paullina must read

This is one of Paullina's best. It has some excellent main characters and the story pulls you in. If you loved The Bronze Horseman series this has the level of depth of that story. The narrators performance was perfection. Such a satisfying listen.

Historical detail

Loved the story, but disliked the ending immensely. Vanessa did not deserve to be the one that got the happy ending.
