About this listen
The impossible job of a doctor in some of the world's wildest places.
‘I found Dad dead on the side of a dirt road. I was sixteen; he was forty-nine.'
After Lachlan McIver's father suffers a sudden, fatal heart attack it sends him into a spiral of grief and outrage. This tragedy inspires him to become a doctor and he eventually finds his calling – providing care for communities in some of the most remote and neglected parts of the world.
In this no-holds-barred memoir, Lachlan recounts his experiences treating patients and tackling health problems across dozens of countries, from rural communities around Australia and the islands of the South Pacific, through natural disasters and civil war zones, to the headquarters of the World Health Organization and Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) in Switzerland.
Lachlan is forced to confront not only the frustrations of trying to provide medical care in extremely under-resourced environments, but broader crises such as health inequities, climate change and drug-resistant infections. He also faces his own personal battles, including with depression, alcohol abuse and bankruptcy.
This is a deeply human look at the personal cost of our broken global health system, and how we must work together to change it for the better. It's what we need right now.
'Just brilliant... The book of the Decade.' TIM FLANNERY

Some people live an interesting life
I loved this audiobook. Although not read by the author (usually a criteria for me), the reader’s voice was easy to listen to.
I work in healthcare, so maybe that biased my enjoyment of the book. However, the story is filled with interesting chapters and experiences of the writer. The author has lived a life many would dream of &/or admire. The book is honest and captivating, shows a juggle between work and relationships, and has lots of heartwarming moments. It’s inspirational & I thoroughly recommend it.

What an amazing story.
How anyone can fit all of these worldly experiences into only a few decades is amazing. A brilliantly told story and I can't wait to follow Lachlan's journey from now on.

So interesting, I could stop listening
The story is so interesting that I made excuses to listen more often. The performance starts off seeming a little flat but the story keeps you engaged. Really enjoyed it and do recommend especially if you have an interest in health.

Great insights into world health
A very fascinating insight into one doctor's experiences of health in Australia and around the world. Raw and candid, Lachie takes us on a powerful adventure Across the worlds of rural and outback health, plus the challenges of relief work with WHO and MSF.

Biased
Political with main themes of climate change, unproven. Hate authors who write with no integrity.

Feet on the ground ??
Did some marvellous things, but an Egghead who hasn’t grown up yet, lots of people got flash in the pan, lightening in and out again and again. I feel very deeply for the so many who live “Outback” who have this erratic service. Better than none ? No it’s not in the long run. If this man could simply live on a much more constant level - wow ! What a gain for him and all about him. A brain but an emotional shipwreck, more peaks and valleys than the Himalayas.
