 Leutnant Gustl, als Offizier der Armee im k.u.k. Österreich Symbol für Ehrempfinden und Standesbewusstsein, fühlt sich während eines Konzerts vom örtlichen Bäckermeister tödlich beleidigt. In einem inneren Monolog, der dem Hörer die Hohlheit und Dekadenz eines dem Untergang geweihten Systems aufzeigt, kommt Gustl zu dem Schluß, daß er mit dieser Schande nicht weiterleben kann. Sein falsch verstandener Ehrenkodex scheint ihm nur einen Ausweg zu lassen: Am nächsten Morgen muß er Selbstmord begehen...

Für seine schonungslose Darstellung wurde Schnitzler 1900 von einem militärischen Ehrengericht der Rang des Oberarztes aberkannt - weil er als Mitglied des Offiziersstandes die Ehre und das Ansehen der österreichisch-ungarischen Armee geschädigt habe...
