About this listen

Glasgow 1953: a hard city at a hard time. The war may be over but the battle for the streets is just beginning, and shady investigator Lennox is the man in the middle.

The McGahern twins were on the way up until Tam, the brains of the outfit, becomes the victim of a vicious contract killing. Tam's brother Frankie turns to Lennox to find out who killed his twin. Lennox refuses. Later that night, Frankie turns up dead, and Lennox finds himself in the frame for murder.

The only way of proving his innocence is to solve the crime - but he'll have to dodge men more deadly than Glasgow's crime bosses before he gets any answers.

Pleased to find this one

I found this title chasing whatever Sean Barrett had narrated and this was a gem. Engaging from beginning to end, a classic story of Glasgow, streets, characters, lingo, real and gritty, like stepping back in time. Lennox a great main character, so likeable and unlikeable as well. Recommended for those who like well rounded crime genre.

Clever plot but a bit too bleak for me

Set in rough, post - WW2 Glasgow. An intricate plot. A cynical main character. Women mostly appear as sex objects. Lots of detailed descriptions of violence. Sean Barrett reads well as usual but that’s not enough to make me want to listen to more of Lennox.

Compelling

Loved the story and the 1950s Glasgow setting. Lennox is a complex and fascinating character, I can't wait to read the second book.

Glasgow. 1950s. Brutal, greatly descriptive.

Would you consider the audio edition of Lennox to be better than the print version?

Yes. The written word tends to be sounded out with one's own accent. Sean Barrett is a master at Scottish accents. I'm Scottish and impressed.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lennox?

The terror of being interviewed by Sneadon with Twinkletoes in the audience.

Which character – as performed by Seán Barrett – was your favourite?

I'm torn between the inspector and Hammer Murphy. Not because I liked them, but because they are portrayed so malevolently well.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The similes of the era are well used, and with some excellent innovations.

Any additional comments?

I've read the listened to the second in the series. I'm lining up the next three too.
