About this listen

It was one of the greatest breakthroughs in human history. An achievement that stunned the entire world. And it was only the beginning.

Facing the cold, clear glass, Alison Shaw stared nervously into the giant seawater tank. It was just one year ago that she and her team of marine biologists had stunned the world with their incredible breakthrough. And now, they were about to do it again. But an ocean away, something strange was unfolding.

Along a lonely coast in South America, an experimental Russian submarine, long thought to have been dismantled, has suddenly resurfaced. And the US Navy has taken notice, sending Officers John Clay and Steve Caesare to investigate.

The sub has been studying a group of unmarked soldiers. Disappearing into the jungle each night beneath the cover of darkness. Something has been discovered...something big. And it's about to fall into the wrong hands.

Unless Alison Shaw and her team can find something that no one else can.

Forgot about the sci-fi

For over half the book I'd forgotten about the real sci-fi aspect that came up in the previous book. It was a shock but a good one when it came in. I tried to predict what roles Dirk and Sally would play and was wrong most of the time. That's a good thing. Really enjoyed how it kept me guessing.

A wonderful read

I enjoyed the combination of scify, science, fantasy and characters that are well developed and not too perfect. The narration was very well done and made the story easy to listen to.

World-building well under construction

Michael C. Grumley scaffolds his debut novel with this second in the series, exhibiting solid world-building as he thrusts his engaging protagonists into further existential that hint at an impending intergalactic catastrophe. We’re starting to peer deeper into the world of the Breakthrough universe, guided by Grumley’s increasingly assured writing style and narrative confidence. This roller-coaster ride was over too soon. Thankfully, there are more high-concept novels in the series pipeline. It can only be a matter of time before Netflix acquires the rights to Breakthrough for adaptation to the screen.
