Né à providence en 1890 Howard Phillips Lovecraft écrit sa première nouvelle à 13 ans. Influencé par les auteurs fantastiques comme Poe, il commence à publier dans le magazine Weird Tales dès l'âge de 22 ans. Auteur d'une soixantaine de nouvelles et d'un roman L'Affaire Charles Dexter Ward, il va renouveler la littérature fantastique en la peuplant de cultes et de dieux anciens et impitoyables. Il meurt d'un cancer en 1939. Méconnu de son vivant, il trouve une gloire posthume comme un des grands auteurs de la littérature d'horreur et de mystère.
