About this listen
Grammy Award-winning musician Rickie Lee Jones tells all in this electrifying, intimate memoir about how a little girl grew up to be one of the most legendary, groundbreaking artists of her time. Read - and sung - by Rickie Lee Jones!
This troubadour life is only for the fiercest hearts, only for those vessels that can be broken to smithereens and still keep beating out the rhythm for a new song.
Last Chance Texaco is the first-ever no-holds-barred account of the life of two-time Grammy Award-winner Rickie Lee Jones in her own words. It is a tale of desperate chances and impossible triumphs, an adventure story of a girl who beat the odds and grew up to become one of the most legendary artists of her time, turning adversity and hopelessness into timeless music.
With candor and lyricism, the “Duchess of Coolsville” (Time) takes us on a singular journey through her nomadic childhood, to her years as a teenage runaway, through her legendary love affair with Tom Waits, and ultimately her longevity as the hardest working woman in rock and roll.
Rickie Lee’s stories are rich with the infamous characters of her early songs - “Weasel and the White Boys Cool”, “Danny’s All-Star Joint”, and “Easy Money” - but long before her notoriety in show business, there was a vaudevillian cast of hitchhikers, bank robbers, jailbreaks, drug mules, a pimp with a heart of gold, and tales of her fabled ancestors.
In this electrifying and intimate memoir by one of the most remarkable, trailblazing, and tenacious women in music are never-before-told stories of the girl in the raspberry beret, a singer-songwriter whose music defied categorization and inspired American pop culture for decades.
Features exclusive new performances of some of Rickie Lee’s most beloved songs, which she recorded especially for this audiobook, culminating in a new recording of the title song “Last Chance Texaco”, plus other memorable and sometimes never-before-heard moments from her long musical life, including the unreleased demo of her early classic “Night Train”.

"Fans of the celebrated musician Rickie Lee Jones will be delighted to hear her narrate her autobiography, which is focused on family memories and making music. Jones is as giving with her delivery as she is with her story. She reaches back through the years - all the way back to her mother's childhood - in a revealing, raspy voice laced with a country twang. Listeners will sink into this experience, which is punctuated by Jones singing short songs between chapters. She doesn't flinch when recounting the harsh years experienced by her mother and uncles as orphans during the Great Depression. While some listeners may find aspects of the gritty realism distressing, Jones's easy and fluid delivery has the flair of an expert storyteller's." (AudioFile Magazine)

Honesty, vulnerability, musical genius
I loved this book - previously I only really associated Rickie Lee Jones with song Chuck E’s in Love.
This bio unfolded a life that was all about being wide open to life’s hard knocks, an internal optimism that somehow kept her positive and sort of safe. An open heart - waiting to be filled with the words of experience and transmute to unique brilliant music.
I get how she and Tom Waits inhabit a musical space so sympatico but so individual.
Thankyou RLJ for your music, really liked the nod to everyone who helped you along the way.
A great read - so glad it was in your voice.

A truly wild ride - poetic & lyrical magic!
A long time fan of Rickie Lee Jones, I thought I knew what to expect. I was wrong. Hearing her Oddyssean story in her own voice with sweet musical digressions & interludes was perfect.
A powerful tale of female survival - the misogyny of the music business, the heartbreaking tale of love gone wrong, the search for truth in artistry and a journey of addiction worthy of a Hunter S Thompson novelette; Rickie Lee's memoir is a spectacular account of self- belief and the pursuit of artistic integrity.
More curves than the scenic railway, this troubadour's tale will take you on a wild ride.

Soundtrack of my Love
What a unique privilege to share this story, in her own words, uttered with her own voice. A natural born storyteller with the prose of a novelist, heart of a poet and strength of a woman. I look forward to re-immersing in her oeuvre with a new insight into the journey behind the music. Listening to this book - incrementally - felt like spending a few weeks staying with a dear, long lost friend. Thank you Rickie Lee! I’ll see you in another life….

Another Masterpiece From The Duchess Of Coolsville
What a life!!
As much of a fan I am, for the longest time, I knew so little about Rickie Lee beyond the amazing body of work she's brought to the world.
She narrates this book so very beautifully, unravelling a huge life lived, with adversity around many corners. It is such a fascinating and beautiful listen that any basic fan of her will love & warmest to it, and if a more avid follower, we'll, it's an obligatory book, for certain.
Impossible to recommend this book more highly - wonderful, full of poignancy, often deeply saddening & very beautifully narrated by Rickie, don't hesitate with this one.

Wow
The most raw, heartfelt, funny and emotional journey through Rickie Lees tough life and extraordinary songbook she has drawn from it. She can sure tell a great story and she is right up there with the great troubadours of her time

Oz-E’s in love!
As Rickie Lee Jones “Horses” is pretty much Australia’s unofficial national anthem, it was wonderful to learn about this wonderful artist through her adventurous artistic life and her poetic words
