Beautiful narration, beautiful story.

Firstly, the narrator is extremely talented. At points it felt like I was hearing the story though my own mind, not through a speaker. The voice acting is very well done and could not have been happier with it.

Secondly the book itself is something I never expected, but in a good way. the characters can at times be so frustrating and annoying, but that's because they react and think like real human beings. It was at multiple points I felt like hugging a character as they had a struggle, it strangling Eevee for being oh so annoying in her way.

This is an extremely enjoyable book and am excited to listen to the next.

Amazing, amazing performance

If I had the option to listen to all books with January LaVoy’s narration, I would do it in less than a heartbeat. The characters are what makes this story come so much more alive and I don’t want this series to end.

Loved it so, so much

Lair of Dreams is the sequel to The Diviners by Libba Bray. The Diviners is set in 1920s New York and follows a cast of characters as they become entangled in a series of occult murders and the paranormal.
Warning this review might contain slight spoilers for The Diviners.

By far my favourite aspects of this series are the characters and the setting.
The 1920s New York gives such a great atmosphere to the story and the prejudices of the time are so well contrasted by the diversity of the cast of characters. In this book we focus a lot more on Henry and a new character, Ling, who are able to walk in dreams. Henry was such a sweet character in the first book that I was really excited to follow him more in this story. I also thought the introduction of Ling, as a disabled half Chinese-half Irish character who has a keen interest in science, was a welcome change from most YA protagonists I typically see.
There is still focus on Evie, Sam and Jericho in this book, specifically following Project Buffalo and Jericho's past. There is also a small love triangle going on between these three characters, and while it was slightly frustrating I didn't hate it outright. I absolutely loved every single interaction between Evie and Sam, the witty back-and-forth banter is incredible and their whole hate-to-love thing is one of my favourite tropes, as is the fake dating trope.
Now to the plot. This book focuses quite heavily on dreams and the temptations they offer. This storyline was an interesting idea and I was engaged the whole time. However, it didn't grip me in quite the same way as the plot of the first book and I didn't quite get the same creep factor. That being said, this was still a favourite of mine and I cannot recommend this series enough.
