About this listen

A ruthless assassin. A chance at vengeance. A deadly secret…

The slow-burn epic fantasy romance sensation that has gripped readers on Booktok!

A cage

Owned by a ruthless assassin lord, Scarlett Monrhoe and her two sisters are the most feared trio on the continent. They are wild and unpredictable, until a tragic night finds Scarlett locked away in a noble's household until she's ready to fall into line.

A choice

Finally, Scarlett is presented with a job. If she completes the assignment, her payment will be something she has coveted for ten years: revenge against the Fire Fae Prince who brutally killed her mother ten years ago.

A mystery

But when children begin disappearing from her home, all her plans are put on hold as she races to save them. With the help of old friends, a jilted lover, and a mysterious newcomer who claims the magic of the Fae is possible in the mortal lands, Scarlett delves into the darkest corners of the world. Forgotten secrets will come to light, and she'll discover that the darkness extends far beyond her own kingdom.

The narrator is almost unreliable. The main characters’ backstories/descriptions are so contradictory to their behaviours that I had to pause the story a few times to calm down. Little miss full-of-herself, highly trained assassin Scarlett calls strangers her family but then says she can’t trust people easily yet has 5 people she trusts unconditionally but then doesn’t inform them of her most idiotic plans! Most of her problems (like getting captured etc) come from her lack of communication and self awareness regarding her abilities. For someone who is super powerful she runs out of power so quickly and uses it up in the most inefficient ways for the sake of aesthetics. Also why is the 300+ year old fae the one that always acts like a child needing his mother in a romantic way? Why is the 200+ year old super powerful war general in such awe of a bunch of 20 year old assassins? The wind fae queen is insufferable. The only characters that I enjoyed were side characters. The idea of this book/world and the magic described is awesome and there is so much potential but the main characters are so weak.

The world is cool the characters are annoying

The story has some great aspects and intersects but for the last third of the book the MC got whiny, immature and a bit ‘woe is me’ rather than the strength she started with. Also had lot of jumping around/past present etc that kind of muddled the waters a bit. Unfortunately it made the last portion drag, which was disappointing as it started really well.
Narrator is amazing. She is one of my favs and the key reason I bought this audio.

Voice actress is one of my favs!
