About this listen

It's December 1810, and Lady Therese Osbaldestone is looking forward to her usual Christmas with her family at Winslow Abbey, her youngest daughter Celia's home. But then a carriage rolls up and disgorges Celia's three oldest children. Their father has contracted mumps, and their mother has sent the three - Jamie, George, and Lottie - to spend this Christmas with their grandmama in Little Moseley.

Therese has never had to manage small children, not even her own. She assumes the children will keep themselves amused but quickly learns that what amuses three inquisitive, curious, and confident youngsters isn't compatible with village peace. Just when it seems she will have to set her mind to inventing something, she and the children learn that with only 12 days to go before Christmas, the village flock of geese has vanished. The children are as mystified and as curious as Therese - and she seizes on the mystery as the perfect distraction for the three children as well as herself.

Critic Reviews

"Helen Lloyd, British actor and narrator, simply enchants with her delivery of this charming story.... Lloyd's portrayal of Lady O. is perfect, capturing her spine of steel and very soft heart. Her portrayals of the children, the young lords, and those working 'below stairs' are also spot-on. This is a true Christmas gift." (AudioFile)

Sweet, stocking filler

This is a charming Christmas themed story centred on of Stephanie Lauren’s recurring characters. There’s enough romance to satisfy the genre and while the mystery might seem a bit simp,e the various characters are interesting to keep up interest. The children in particular are sweet. The narrator Helen Lloyd is a female version of the great Simon Prebble. It’s an audio version of stocking filler.

The plan!

This lovely family Christmas held in a country village which Lady Osbaldestone inherited from an Aunt many years before. She was asked to look after her grandchildren due to their Father having got Mumps. Not knowing how she was going to entertain them, a mystery of the missing geese was exclaimed by the farmer who supplied the whole village with fare. So an adventure begins. This story also gives an insight into a 50 year old Lady Osbaldestone rather than the very old Lady referred to in the Cynster family stories.

Charming story of a village Christmas

A delightful account of a traditional village Christmas with the complications arising from the disappearance of the Christmas geese and an ice skating disaster. Well read and engaging.

Very long winded, almost boring

Very long winded, 6 hours devoted to a goose hunt. If I was reading it I would not have persevered. No real depth to the story. Well narrated.
