È una delle eterne domande della vita e della letteratura, soggetto di innumerevoli scritti, tra cui "La provinciale" di Alberto Moravia, un racconto pubblicato nel 1937 e inserito nella raccolta "L'imbroglio", diventato poi soggetto nel 1953 di un film considerato tra i più belli di Mario Soldati, con Gina Lollobrigida e Gabriele Ferzetti.

Gemma (la protagonista) è il prototipo letterario delle ragazze convinte che l'avvenenza fisica sia il passaporto per il successo e la notorietà, e che sia possibile trovare delle illusorie scorciatoie per vivere una vita felice e spensierata. In questo senso il racconto è di grande attualità.
