Cette bataille, c'est Essling, près de Vienne, en 1809, qui précéda d'un mois celle de Wagram. Elle opposa l'armée de Napoléon aux Autrichiens de l'Archiduc Charles.Balzac voulut en faire le récit, mais c'est Patrick Rambaud qui réalisera le projet en faisant revivre l'événement par deux amis : le peintre Louis-François Lejeune, alors colonel au service du maréchal Berthier, et Henri Beyle - futur Stendhal - commissaire dans l'intendance.
