Året er 1626. Kongens "uægte" datter Erla er rejst tilbage til Norge, efter at hun er blevet afvist af sin far. Derhjemme finder hun sammen med Amund Bratt; sammen får de sønnen Jon. Knap voksen bliver han sendt til København for at studere. Han bor hos Erlas mor, Aona, i Hyskenstræde.
