About this listen
The last war was fought with weapons unimaginable....
A war was fought. Humanity lost.
Time for a rematch.
The world fell, the invaders won, and demons now ruled what had once been man's domain. The great works of a once powerful civilization lie in ruins, its people having forgotten the wonders of their forefathers as they now live in the yoke. Not everyone is willing to go quietly into the endless night, however, and for every inch of ground they'd won, they had paid in blood and bone. At the end of it all, however, the demons stood victorious and all that was left to accomplish was the final cleanup of the human pests that infested occasional parts of the conquered world.
In one nearly uninhabitable part of that world, a very young such pest has come of age and, without understanding what it means, she walks in the shadow of destiny.
The demons have a lesson to learn, one last to be taught to them by humans, before they can call this world truly their own.
A cleansing fire can start from the smallest of sparks...and it is always darkest just before the dawn.

slow start but well worth persisting
It certainly starts out slow and for me, it took awhile before i liked the main characters but once you get into it, i thought it's really quite an engaging story and i came to really like the MC's. I'm about to start the next audiobook so i recommend you give it a chance.
having said that, the audio quality of the recording is one of the poorest I've heard from Audible, the narrator is fine once you get used to the accents but it sounds like it was recorded on a cassette tape. I hope the second book fixes the issue.

Overall quite good.
The narrator has an unfortunate way of adding feeling to almost every sentence. Where it’s required she does so admirably, but where it’s not, I find it grating.
The story is quite good if a little preachy at times.
One of the better listens on the plus catalogue.

A run of the mill story, told painfully boringly
After 4 hours I gave up as there is nothing interesting, novel or existing here. So perhaps the book gets better later on, I honestly have no clue, but what I listened to this far killed of my motivation and stamina to even attempt listening any longer.
Unless you enjoy another "Hero loses parents to evil monsters, swears revenge, fails, is rescued be future mentor and then begins journey towards becoming a run of the mill hero" give this one a skip. Sadly the aforementioned standard fantasy plot is on-top of being utterly predictable, so boringly presented that it feels like a total drag. The characters are one dimensional, the monster/demons lack any substance and feel like caricatures.
Perhaps suitable to teen readers making their first foray into fantasy literature, though I doubt they have the patience either.
