Publisher's Summary

The massacre at Tancred House seems at first to be the work of a burglar, panicked into killing. But Chief Inspector Wexford believes there are links with the murder of a Kingsmarkham detective some ten months earlier.

Not the best from Ruth

Too convoluted. Too many characters. An implausible end. A high point: Ruth’s original descriptions of the countryside and especially of human foibles.

Riveting Characters

An engrossing murder mystery, this is the second Ruth Rendell novel I've read now and I think I may be hooked. Rendell expertly brings her characters and situations alive with observations and details that are believable and take her writing to a level above many crime novels of today.
My only small gripe is that I found the ending to be far too abupt, I prefer my endings to be more padded out and all loose ends neatly tied up.
Still, an excellent murder mystery worth reading.

Less tree descriptions more story

Beautifully read. At least one third of the descriptive padding could be dropped. Wexford quite boring, constant literary illusions, and too involved in his daughters life. The plot was quite flat in the end.

Great story

I love this series and wish there were more available on Audible. Wish i could listen to it again for the first time. I did guess early on who did it, but not the reason so still really enjoyed the book.
