About this listen
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of King Hereafter by Dorothy Dunnett, read by David Rintoul.
It is the eleventh century, and Europe is full of young kings - some dreaming of new civilisation, some content to live as their forefathers have done, and all ceaselessly fighting, befriending or betraying one other.
Such is the world of the real Macbeth, part Christian, part Viking, who has the imagination and determination to move himself and his people out of a barbarian past and into flowering nationhood. In this brilliant recreation of his life we see him as a man of extraordinary courage, wit and skill - utterly self-reliant yet profoundly in love with woman he marries - a pirate of the sea yet a prince with the foresight and passion to set him apart from other men.

Fabulous
The reader breathes even more life than is already written into this fabulous recreation of a period of history little known and yet underlying our modern lives with its violence, nepotism and political and religious manoeuvring. The author's 'novel' premise is that Macbeth and Thorfinn the Mighty are the same person and its a fascinating idea.
I am about half way through the audible book, having read this in the past and loved it. The richness of description, the depiction of the lives of Saxons, Norse, Gaels, Picts, Bretons and Normans, along with the changes relating to the belief systems of the Irish church versus the Holy Roman Empire and church versus the disappearing pagan world are astounding.
At the heart of it is the love story of two strong, clever & vital characters, Macbeth and his wife Ingeborg/Margaret/Groa/Gruach.
I love the way Dorothy Dunnett uses the character Lulach as the voice of history.
David Rintoul does a terrific job with his rhythmic narration including the extraordinary variety of names and places.
A desert island book for me.
