About this listen

'The rock cast a sharp, dark shadow over a shape huddled on the ground. Please don’t let it be the boy, Colomba thought. Her silent prayer didn’t go unanswered. The corpse belonged to the mother.'

When a woman is beheaded in a park outside Rome and her six-year-old son goes missing, the police unit assigned to the case sees an easy solution: they arrest the woman’s husband and await his confession. But the Chief of Rome’s Major Crimes unit doubts things are so simple. Secretly, he lures to the case two of Italy’s top analytical minds: Deputy Captain Colomba Caselli, a fierce, warrior-like detective still reeling from having survived a bloody catastrophe, and Dante Torre, a man who spent his childhood trapped inside a concrete silo. Fed through the gloved hand of a masked kidnapper who called himself 'The Father', Dante emerged from his ordeal with crippling claustrophobia but, also, with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and hyper-observant capacities.

All evidence suggests that 'The Father' is back and active after being dormant for decades. But when Columba and Dante begin following the ever-more-bizarre trail of clues, they grasp that what’s really going on is darker than they ever imagined.

Kill the Angel, the sequel to Kill the Father, publishes in May 2018.

Critic Reviews

'An intelligent thriller… very entertaining' (Jake Kerridge)
'Absolutely electrifying. Kill the Father is one of those rare treasures: a page-turning thriller--in every sense of the phrase--that is also brilliantly nuanced and rich with insight into the complex and compelling minds of those, good and bad, who inhabit its pages. This novel is the new definition of a one-sitting read' (Jeffery Deaver, author of The Burial Hour)
‘Ingenious…features a pair of protagonists with personal demons as unnerving as the vicious monster they’re pursuing’ (John Verdon, author of Wolf Lake)

Great investigation

Really well read story with excellent pronunciation of the mostly Italian names. This investigation kept me hooked with none of those “oh sure, as if” moments I have often had reading police/detective stories. Best read in a while. Really enjoyed.

What an original author. Had to pause reading part way through, disturbing! Brilliant! Frightening! Very dark

A convoluted whodunit

I found the story compelling listening, although the narrator had a few pronunciation issues. I wanted to know the outcome. The characters were very likeable, although seemingly indestructible. An enjoyable few hours listening.

So much detail

What a great book and story. The twists and turns made it compelling listening and I recommend wholeheartedly

Great story and great narrator

I really enjoyed this book. Although at times I felt it was a little long, it just kept dragging me back.

The majority of the characters (probably all of them) have Italian names and I found it hard to separate them in my mind for that reason.

But it is a great read/listen and I’d recommend it.

Had me on the edge of my seat

Once I started the book, I could not stop. I had to know what happened next; then that would lead to more mystery that I needed to discover. The kind of book you cannot put down til its finished!

BRILLIANT!!!

So much happens in this great story I could barely keep up and was eager to finish it. Excited to start Book 2 in the series. A real treat for someone who enjoys the crime genre. This is exceptional.

Good but predictable crime novel

Good quality narration I'm not the biggest fan of crime novels. I found the story a bit predictable with convenient plot developments along the way.
