About this listen

Some women are destined to arouse in men either fierce hatred or insatiable desire. Such a woman was Katie Mulholland.

At 15, a scullery maid in the house of the Rosires, she had been raped by the master. Now, many years later, she had enough money to maintain three carriages if she wanted to, and she was on her way to see Bernard Rosier under very different circumstances.

There was no pride in Katie Mulholland's heart, however, only fear, for half of Tyneside still talked about the way she had flouted convention, and sniggered about the way she had made her money. So she had decided that her only hope was to climb above them, and that she would conquer her fear with power....

An excellent story about cruelty and loyalty

Enjoyed the reader and the acting. A lovely romance during 1860 to 1960 covering family generations of love hate opportunity and manipulation. I love the stories of Britain and it’s hierarchy. I recommend as a good read.

Long and saga like

Not one of my favourite Cookson books but still a good yarn.
The story follows the lead character from teens to death in old age so it is rather a long story but not too drawn out.

Wonderful story

Loved the story stretching over the decades of hard times in the 1800s. Well written and wonderfully narrated. I look forward to more books from this author.

Katie Mulholland

Great story read badly, especially close to the end. I love Catherine Cookson books and maybe I should have read this rather than listened.
