In den 1930ern begegnet er dem Ich-Erzähler zum ersten Mal, der zu der Zeit noch ein Kind ist. Später, nach dem Zusammenbruch des "Dritten Reiches", treffen sich beide wieder in Dresden. Der Ich-Erzähler hat seine Eltern während der Bombardierung Dresdens verloren und studiert inzwischen Ornithologie. Die beiden Forscher verbindet schon bald internationale Anerkennung.
