About this listen

Seeing spirits is one thing, but feeling the pain of their death is an experience best left alone. Restless spirits, a ghost dog, and two men connected to the spirit world. What could go wrong? Bran Tanda works at the hospital morgue despite the fact he can see and hear all the spirits that tend to congregate there. He wants to help them, even if they terrify him with their aggressive tactics to get him to acknowledge their existence.
Jordan Amid is Bran’s assistant. He’s reluctant to interact too much with the dead since he can feel all the pain from their death and the confusion they’re left with. But he’s drawn to work there with Bran, and his ghost dog Buddy. Bran and Jordan are thrown into a world where things are changing, and without their help everyone will suffer the dead. Stronger together than separately, they’ll both need to face their fears and find the strength they’ll need to fight the evil forces that threaten them and all of humanity.

A great series start but not my narration style

I need to state first I didn't dislike this story; I disliked the narration. Allen Jeffries is exceptionally off-putting, and if this had been much longer, I wouldn't have been able to persevere with it. I don't know if it's his style or an aspect of his chosen accent but Jefferies makes these male characters sound almost stupid or at least a little dense, especially Bran, Janis feels almost shrill in comparison. That is not how BL Maxwell wrote them, she wrote them as reticent but not dense. I saw another review praising Allen Jefferies but I really bounced him and his work here. I am in the middle of an audiobook run right now so I am slightly more sensitive to narrator styling, a very personal thing.

Just Another Day At The Morgue is a prequel novella to the Spirit Boys series. Introducing readers to the characters, world and lore of the series. The book has four characters, Bran Tanda, Jordan Amid, Justice Rafferty and Janis. Bran and Jordan are co-workers in a morgue, they are hiding their paranormal secrets from each other. Bran is a Necromancer, he has the ability to see and speak to the dead. Jordan is an Empath, he can sense the emotions of the dead. They are essentially two sides of the same coin. We join them the day Justice arrives at the morgue, he is the body that starts the whole story. Janis is a local psychic who has been helping Jordan cope with his emotions and knows Justice.

The story does feel thought out. The characters work together well. I found the ending satisfying, knowing it was just a prequel. It does get a bonus point for having a super cute ghost pupper. Buddy is an absolute sweetie, the bestest dog. This is one for paranormal fans.
