الكتاب يسلط الضوء على جوانب من فكر "جون ديوى" فيتناوله ك: "مربي، صاحب خبرة، فيلسوف، برجماتي، أداتي، منطقي، أخلاقي."

ويتناول فى كل نقطة فكر "ديوي" وتأثره بمن سبقه ونقده لمن أختلف معهم منه ونقد من عاصره من المختلفين معه له، ويُختَم الكتاب بنصوص مختارة منقولة من مقالاته فى الفلسفة لتكون أكثر تعبيرا عن حقيقة فكر ومذهبه.
