Critic Reviews

"Mali Waugh lifts the lid on the legal profession's biggest secret. What happens behind the courtroom is even more compelling than what happens in it. Beyond a reasonable doubt this is one of the best Australian legal thrillers in years." (Aoife Clifford)

"I absolutely loved Judgement Day. It kept me guessing right the way through, but pulled it all together in the end in a way that was immensely satisfying and solid. It's really refreshing to read such a quality procedural, and it's impressive work for a debut. I also loved the relationship between Jillian and McClintock, it's a different dynamic from the usual, and made for another great payoff in the end." (Shelley Burr, bestselling author of Wake)

"Judgement Day is a thrilling ride. I loved delving into the world of the courts - what a place to set a crime novel - the intrigue, the snobbery and the privilege. This book kept me up all night and I can't stop thinking about it." (Margaret Hickey, bestselling author of Stone Town)

A great read

This is a gripping murder mystery. It's a tightly written novel set in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Detective Jillian Bassett is returning to work following a period of maternity leave and is directed to attend the family law courts building in Melbourne where the deceased body of Judge Kaye Bailey has been found in her secure chambers. Who could have murdered her? Who had access to her chambers? Waugh describes both the family law side of things and the police investigation side of things by effortlessly moving between the two components. Waugh's description of one of the male suspects current accommodation and lifestyle leaves no doubt she is an astute observer of people. Waugh brings Melbourne and its inner suburbs to the reader with wonderful engaging descriptions. I want to pace the streets she describes, and purchase coffee from Jillian's Basset's favourite street vendor. Jillian's struggles as a new mum is "the elephant in the room" with her work colleagues; and the writing sensitive, and honest. I wasn't able to guess the ending. It was a very satisfying and informative read. I want more of Jillian Bassett!
