About this listen
The 50th-anniversary edition of Margaret Walker's best-selling classic, with a foreword by Nikki Giovanni.
Jubilee tells the true story of Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress. Vyry bears witness to the South's antebellum opulence and to its brutality, its wartime ruin, and the promises of Reconstruction.
Weaving her own family's oral history with 30 years of research, Margaret Walker's novel brings the everyday experiences of slaves to light. Jubilee churns with the hunger, the hymns, the struggles, and the very breath of American history.

brought tears to my eyes!
I share some of this history also coming from a background of slavery and master. I had hatred in my heart until I finally understood I needed to love all the parts that make up who I am today. I used to resent what had happened to my great grandmothers on 3 sides. Only 1 great grandmother had a choice but even she was traded for furs by her brothers up in Canada although was told she didn't have to go.
Im so glad to know my history and thoroughly enjoyed listening to the writers rich history that runs parallel to mine. In the end the beautiful words and passion Virrie expressed her deepest philosophy brought tears to my eyes and gave me further forgiveness to those in the past for they were ignorant. We know better now than to treat people like animals yet many people do. We can only lead by example and teach our children well in hopes that they too will pass on the same.
