"Jørgens krig" er fortællingen om den unge Jørgen Røjel, der under besættelsen ikke kunne lade være, men måtte blande sig. Beslutningen om at gå til modstand traf han, mens han gjorde tjeneste som underlæge på en minestryger. I roklubben lærte han Kronprins Frederik at kende, og på Amalienborg drøftede han en sen aften over en øl Danmarks situation med Kronprinsen: Samarbejde og pragmatisme eller modstand og idealisme? For Jørgen var der ikke noget valg. Og måske derfor blev han snart en af modstandsbevægelsens store skikkelser.

Erik Knoths romanbiografi samler ikke blot Jørgen Røjels store indsats men giver en fin og spændende skildring af "de fem mørke år" under besættelsen og frem til befrielsen, hvor Røjel kom til at spille en lederrolle i modstandsorganisationen Holger Danske.
