About this listen
Johnny Appleseed's real name was John Chapman, a native of Massachusetts who lived from 1774 to 1845. It is known that he wandered for 40 years through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana sowing apple seeds, staying one step ahead of the pioneer movement in order to sell seedlings to those who traveled through. Chapman was known for his humanitarian values: his cheerfulness, generosity, and most of all, his respect for, and nearly mystical relationship with, nature. It is these qualities which storyteller Marc Joel Levitt captures in his stories and relays with resonance, humor, and conviction.
For Ages 6 to Adult.

In this performance, expert storyteller Mac Joel Levitt recounts the biography of "100% genuine, guaranteed real human being" Johnny Appleseed. Levitt addresses listeners directly, appealing to all their senses and stimulating their historic imaginations. Incidental music evokes children's choirs, Appalachian banjo sessions, and the fife and drum bands of the Revolutionary War era. Levitt dramatizes 12 characters in this performance, and background sound effects place listeners in the middle of the action. In addition to being an award-winning storyteller, Levitt also works in education and launched the website "Third Culture Stories", which takes contributions from kids, teens, and adults from all over the world.
