Publisher's Summary

Joining us for a chat is the people's poet laureate, the punk performance poet, John Cooper Clarke, who is releasing his memoir I Wanna Be Yours.

Clarke, born in Salford, is well known for his classic look of drainpipe jeans, wild black hair and sunglasses, whatever the weather, something which hasn't changed since the 1970s. Being inspired and encouraged by an English teacher at school, Clarke decided that he would make a living from poetry. He performed with many hugely successful bands, such as The Sex Pistols, Joy Division and New Order.

He lost a lot of the 1980s to drugs, but after resurfacing, Clarke released several albums and returned to performing his poetry regularly. His poems have been used in media, such as The Sopranos using 'Evidently Chickentown', as well as Danny Boyle's 2001 film Strumpet. His work has also inspired may others, including The Arctic Monkeys, who have an album, AM, based on Clarke's poetry. More recently, Clarke has appeared on radio and television, presenting The Secret Life of Books, and as a panellist in comedy shows such as Would I Lie To You? and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

We caught up with John Cooper Clarke to talk about his inspirations and lifelong love of poetry, his recently published memoir I Wanna Be Yours, whether or not he considers himself to be a comedian, and lots more.
