About this listen

One of the greatest love stories ever written, Jane Eyre is the tale of a young woman entangled with the powerful Mr. Rochester. What lurks in the attic at Thornfield, the ancestral home of the surly Mr. Rochester? Will the governess Jane Eyre discover his secret, and having discovered it, live to regret that knowledge? Battling inside Jane are passion and prudence; she struggles to survive the turmoil they cause.©2005 NAXOS AudioBooks Ltd. (P)2005 NAXOS AudioBooks Ltd. Brilliantly narration of an excellent story

I would listen to just about anything narrated by Amanda Root. In this book, she ceases to be Amanda Root, and becomes the voice of Jane Eyre (intertwined expertly with the voices of all the other characters). Highly enjoyable. It was also my first time reading Jane Eyre (also having never watched the movies), and the emotion and passion of the novel is striking! Loved it.

The best reading I've ever listened to

Amanda Root is a goddamn gift. Her characterisations are beautiful, giving depth and sweetness to the novel.
I have listened to an abridged reading of Jane Eyre by another voice actor who made Mr Rochester deeply sinister. While that was an interesting take, this version has sympathy for its characters but also brings out the deep contemplations on the nature of piety and love of God that Charlotte Brontë brought through the characters.
This reading is my meditation, my sleep sounds and my go to when I lose faith in art.
