About this listen

A dramatised reading capturing all the passionate intensity of Charlotte Brontë’s great romantic novel.

Bronte's infamous Gothic novel tells the story of orphan Jane, a child of unfortunate circumstances. Raised and treated badly by her aunt and cousins and eventually sent away to a cruel boarding school, it is not until Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield that she finds happiness. Meek, measured, but determined, Jane soon falls in love with her brooding and stormy master, Mr Rochester, but it is not long before strange and unnerving events occur in the house and Jane is forced to leave Thornfield to pursue her future.

Volume control??

I LOVE Jane Eyre, it's an amazing story... but MY GOD this dramatisation was as insane as Bertha Mason herself! I kept alternating between turning up the volume because the voices were so quiet to jumping in fright at characters shouting all of a sudden. Also, I know its harder to portray emotions through verbal storytelling alone but WOW could the voice acting be any worse? Sorry, but what a waste of time and money.

Claire Bloom's voice like Celia Johnson

Bloom's expressive feeling for the personality of Jane Eyre combined with rare old-fashioned stage diction, makes this audiobook one of my favourites of the many versions of J.E. (I like Ruth Wilson's energy, Amanda Hale's characterisation). The few qualms are that the story is so heavily and oddly abridged, and sometimes I don't find Anthony Quayle's handling of Rochester as nuanced as Bloom's of Eyre; but their final dialogue is really fine. I actually still haven't found the best version, though I think Timothy Dalton matched the part quite well. The most moving scene is the couple's conflict after the cancelled wedding and nowhere have I found it well represented.
