About this listen

The work tells the story of Jane's early life, her experience at Lowood School and as a governess. Her refusal to accept Rochester's love on any but her own strictly moral terms is a passionate cry for independence.©2006 BBC Audiobooks (P)2014 Audible, Inc. i resisted reading Jane Eyre in college and have never felt inclined to read British 19th-century novels - but wow, i'm very pleased to be accessing this kind of literature via Audible and the superb reading of Juliet Stevenson. i listened to this in bed and was absolutely transported. The depth of emotion and character development is extraordinary. i take back all my dumb preconceptions about the relevance of 19th-century novels. This is an extraordinary work that helps us understand human feeling and emotion in any era.

Brilliant way to experience classics

For me, Jane Eyre is about the complexities of being human and the value of inner strength. There is challenge, despair, misadventure and mystery but all along the way you are given moments of raw heart which are enough to sustain you and propel you on to the next. Just like life. Dare to dream, make the best of your circumstances and build the life you wish for! I'm not too shy to admit that sometimes when I'm facing something in my own life I wonder - what would Jane do?

Juliet Stevenson narrates this perfectly! Her voice is now always connected to Jane inside my head. I can't tell you how many times I have returned to this story. The first time I enjoyed it I was hooked! As a re-listen/read/watch I find it calming.

I keep coming back to this book
