About this listen

A great Australian yarn about a bold Australian outback adventure belonging to another time in another world, inspired by a true story. The happy routine life of two Perth boys is shattered one November day in 1950 when they are falsely accused of theft. With fabricated evidence mounting against them they decide to run away from their homes and families to avoid prosecution and pooling their meager pocket money they back the winner of the Melbourne Cup and fund an escape.©2005 Tony McKenna and Mervyn Davis (P)2009 Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Fiction Historical Fiction Literature & Fiction Comedy

Critic Reviews

"David Tredinnick is nothing short of outstanding as the boys travel, meeting a happy-go-lucky Irishman, a soft-spoken priest, an older Aborigine man and his nephew, and many others. Each voice for more than a dozen unique characters sounds perfectly distinct.... It’s an exciting trip for the boys and for listeners, as well, as the two mates discover the true definition of home." The perfect road trip book!

Our family enjoyed this story as we drove from Alice Springs, through Tenant Creek and across into QLD to the coast. Having travelled previously via Adelaide, Port Augusta, Coober Pedy and Yalara, we identified strongly with many of the places the characters in this book had travelled also. We fell in love with Jack and Harry and the other personalities of this story and can’t wait to listen to the next book!
A must listen audiobook for all great Aussie road trips!

everything was fabulous. can't fault it, reminded me of my father's adventures in the bush, droving with aboriginal stockmen and crossing the Cooper Creek.

Not to be Missed

The best book I have heard in 5 years of listening to auditable books and I have listened to many.
Great story about the Australian bush and lifestyle.
Pity the schools don't make all kids listen to this book.
Extremely well read as well, a real Larkin narrator
