About this listen
A fortuitous encounter. A meeting that should never have happened.
Many years ago, two children from completely different worlds forged a connection, a fateful connection, an unbreakable bond that would change their lives forever...
Salome knows only one way to live - under Prophet David’s rule. In the commune she calls home, Salome knows nothing of life beyond her strict faith, nor of life beyond the Fence - the fence that cages her, keeps her trapped in an endless cycle of misery. A life she believes she is destined to always lead, until a horrific event sets her free.
Fleeing the absolute safety of all she has ever known, Salome is thrust into the world outside, a frightening world full of uncertainty and sin; into the protective arms of a person she believed she would never see again.
River ‘Styx’ Nash knows one thing for certain in life - he was born and bred to wear a cut. Raised in a turbulent world of sex, Harleys, and drugs, Styx, unexpectedly has the heavy burden of the Hades Hangmen gavel thrust upon him, and all at the ripe old age of twenty-six - much to his rivals’ delight.
Haunted by a crushing speech impediment, Styx quickly learns to deal with his haters. Powerful fists, an iron jaw, and the skillful use of his treasured German blade has earned him a fearsome reputation as a man not to be messed with in the shadowy world of outlaw MC’s. A reputation that successfully keeps most people far, far away.
Styx has one rule in life - never let anyone get too close. It’s a plan that he has stuck to for years, that is, until a young woman is found injured on his lot...a woman who looks uncannily familiar, a woman who clearly does not belong in his world, yet a woman he feels reluctant to let go...

Heart warming & gut wrenching all at once.
Firstly, the narrators did the most amazing job. The male character was flawlessly portrayed.
The storyline was not my usual pick, the darkness, the constant derogatory usage of word bitch & depiction of the abuse the young woman was quite difficult to listen to. Yet, it was told in such a manor that you fall in love with the main characters including all their flaws.
I am thrilled to have discovered an author that can capture a story that isn’t sunshine & rainbows yet draws you in like a moth to a flame.

Excellent
Salome at 8 years old has just had the worst experience of her life and she huddles under a tree near the fence of the compound she is held in. River ‘Styx’ Nash is exploring and accidentally encounters Salome, he is 11 and this chance encounter will change both of their lives forever but, it takes 15 years for that change to occur. Salome now known as May along with Styx will face many challenges along the way. Styx is now the President of Hades Hangmen and May a frightened shadow of herself in a world she doesn't understand. This is an intense love story about two people who are destined to be together if only the outside world would give them a chance. I highly recommend this story it had me hooked from word go and I couldn't stop listening and devoured the audio book in two sessions, now I am onto book two.

holy shut the front door!!!!!!
wow , this is as gritty as your gonna get. I thought t.m. Frazier did well but tillie takes it to a whole new level.
there is no niceties here and from what tillie Cole commented in regards to her research regarding religion, this is Gob smacking horrific. I cringed well and truly in a few places.
the plot is fantastic although I kept wondering about the lack of writing in regards to the basic sex rules...clean??? and babies??? i found it to be a flaw in an otherwise gripping story.
Mae was a little frustrating at times and Kept Rolling my eyes at her responses but I had to keep reminding myself that she is not of any other society but the cult. when I keep that in mind I can see why she is written this way.
there is no real HEA in this story....as in a standard HEA, after all they are an MC club and completely lawless. but it makes sense what Styx tells Mae and how she embraces the MC life . so I guess it's a MC HEA.
it's a nice little...and I mean little...cliffhanger but it's the way the series keeps rolling. don't know how Mae is gonna take it though...I hope tillie writes a bigger set of brass into her character if she's going where I think she's going.
Maddie is a surprise and will definitely be an interesting read.
and I'm thinking Ky is going to have his work cut out for him. I just hope tillie can keep the twists coming while that plot or sub plot gets underway.
soooo if you want absolute gravelgrit, badass bikers with really bad language and no shame for sexual encounters in plain view....as well as cult life including gruesome scenes and torture....then knock your self out ....as for me I'm on to book 2. it's bloody awesome reading. a far cry from sports romance or love/hate romances.
I'm normally a black ops girl but have taken the plunge Into lawless MC life..woohooo

Great 1st book to this series
Loved this book. Narrators made the story very enjoyable but the story itself had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't stop listening and am looking forward to book 2

Fantastic!
I first read this back in 2016 and didn’t appreciate the full depth of this book.
This time around I listened to the audiobook and was blown away.
This story is dark and at times uncomfortable to get through but the writing was tight and the narrators did an incredible job portraying May and most notably Styx’s characters.
Bumped this up from my 2016 rating of 3 stars to a solid 5.

predictable
If you like romanticized stories about bikers this is possibly for you. It's tame porn with a very predictable story. The narration was good however I won't go for the sequels
