富岡製糸場の建設によって日本の製糸産業は大きく発展し、この工場で作られた良質な生糸は海外に輸出され、日本の経済を支えました。
ただし、絹産業は製糸工場だけでは成り立たず、蚕の卵を採取する蚕種業、蚕を飼育する養蚕業も欠かせません。
その役割を担った田島弥平旧宅、高山社跡、荒船風穴も、ともに世界遺産に登録されています。
