流氷が溶ける春、光合成によって増えた植物プランクトンが動物プランクトンをおびき寄せます。
動物プランクトンは小型の魚のエサとなり、その魚はクジラやシャチ、海鳥、アザラシなどのエサとなります。
卵を体内に蓄えて川をのぼるサケやマスは、ヒグマや猛禽類のエサとなり、食べ残された死骸は、土に返って森を豊かにします。
