清水寺のご本尊である千手観音は、1000本の手を持ち、あらゆる人を救ってくれるといわれています。
貴重なため、ご本尊の実物が見られるのは33年に一度ですが、ふだんは「御前立」と呼ばれる模造を見ることができます。
そのため清水寺は創建以来、観音信仰の聖地とされ、身分の高い人から一般庶民まで、多くの人が訪れました。
山の中腹に建つため眺めが良く、広い境内に多くの堂塔が立ち並ぶ清水寺は、「舞台」や清冽な水が流れ落ちる「音羽の滝」など、見所もたくさん。
