鎌倉時代には武士の戦いの訓練として行われていましたが、江戸時代には相撲を職業とする大名お抱えの力士が登場して、興行化。
次第にルール化されて競技としての性格を強め、相撲は歌舞伎とならぶ庶民の楽しい娯楽となりました。
現在でも力士がまげを維持するなど、江戸時代と同じスタイルで行われています。
そして相撲が行われる国技館などの会場では、観客はお酒と食事を楽しみながら、力士の勝負に熱狂しています。
