Shintoism is a religion unique to Japan and has existed since before Buddhism came to the country. Shintoism is a type of nature worship that believes that gods are present in everything, such as rocks, mountains, trees, and animals. 神道とは仏教伝来以前からある日本特有の宗教で、岩や山、木や動物など、あらゆるものに神が宿るとする自然崇拝の一種です。
神社の多くは、こうした自然があった場所や、儀式が行われていた場所に建っており、入り口には鳥居があり、神の世界と人の住む世界とを区別しています。
どの神社も、日本の神話に登場する神を祀っており、その神が宿るとされる「御神体」と呼ばれるものを本殿の中に安置しています。
