日本における陶芸の歴史は古く、1万年以上前に始まる縄文時代に作られていた縄文土器は、日本最古の焼き物といわれます。
日本の陶芸は中国など海外の影響を受けて発展、日本独自の焼き物が登場したのは安土桃山時代の頃といわれます。
当時は茶の湯や禅宗が流行し、質素な中にも美を追求する「わび・さび」の精神に基づく日本人の美意識が、焼き物にも表れるようになったのです。
美濃や瀬戸、益子、有田など、日本では各地で陶磁器が作られ、焼き物の町として知られる地域もあります。
現在、日本では国から伝統的工芸品と認められた陶磁器が、31種類にのぼります。
